Addressing Hunger in Ventura
Hunger isn’t just a global issue — it’s a local one. Right here in Ventura County, families, seniors, and children experience food insecurity every day. Rising food and fuel prices, coupled with limited resources, mean too many of our neighbors are struggling to access nutritious meals.
The Ventura Downtown Lions Club is committed to changing that. With support from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), we help improve food security and access to nutritious food by:
• Partnering with Food Share of Ventura County and other local organizations to ensure food reaches those who need it most.
• Organizing community feeding events for vulnerable populations including seniors, disabled individuals, and under-resourced families.
• Working with local businesses and grocers to reduce food waste and redirect quality surplus food.
• Supporting nutrition education to help families make healthier choices with the resources they have.
About Food Share
Because no one should go hungry. Since 1978, Food Share has grown from a grassroots effort under a bridge in Ventura to Ventura County’s regional food bank. Today, operating out of three warehouses in Oxnard, Food Share distributes nearly 20 million pounds of food annually — the equivalent of 16 million meals — through 175 pantry and program partners. Each year, Food Share helps feed more than 250,000 neighbors in need across Ventura County.
Globally, more than 2.4 billion people lacked sufficient access to food in 2022, and one-third of all food is lost or wasted. Locally, Ventura Lions, in partnership with Food Share, are working to close that gap and ensure that every meal makes a difference.
Together, we can build a stronger, healthier Ventura — one meal at a time.
